The umbrella is done. I had run out of fabric when making the main canopy so I had to order more before I finished.
I had some trouble with the fly...I had patterned off of the original, and before I applied the binding, I tested the fit and it was too short. It was perplexing. After studying the original vs what I had made, I realized that the original fabric had just a teensy bit of stretch to it, whereas the Sunbrella fabric I used most certainly does not have any give to it whatsoever.
I cut out 8 more gores for another attempt at the fly. I made some adjustments to the measurements to account for the lack of stretch. Up on the ladder I went to test the fit again...and now the fly was just a teensy bit too big, where the ribs wouldn't hold in the pockets!
Time to get creative. Not in the mood to make yet another fly, I decided to use some elastic to loop around the ribs. I just zigzagged small loops of elastic into each of the seam allowances. This way, the elastic would hold the fly to the ribs even if the ends don't stay in the pockets. Is it perfect? Nope. Will anyone ever notice? Only if they get up on a ladder to inspect it...and no one's going to do that. Ever. So whatever, it works!
